2009 observation rules
The main change for 2009 is you don't get penalised for a (feet up)stop. But apparantly the ACU have dropped a goolie with the 2009 rules. They seem to have omitted a bit in the definition of footing about 'any part of the machine touching' and have offered the advice that we refer to the 2008 rules FOR THAT PART ONLY. However it raises the issue about why it refers to stopping. These are the bits from the 2 years...........................
2008
Footing: Footing will be considered to have occurred if the rider benefits from any part of the riders body or any part of the machine, (with the exception of the tyres or the sump shield), touches (sic) the ground or an obstacle (tree, wall etc.), without stopping the progress of the machine.
Footing outside the lateral limits of a Section does not constitute a failure but should simply be classed as footing............................
2009
Footing: Footing will be considered to have occurred if any part of the riders body touches the ground or the rider benefits from any part of his body leaning on an obstacle (tree, wall etc.), without stopping the progress of the machine.
Footing outside the lateral limits of a Section does not constitute a failure but should simply be classed as footing.
Please refer to the PRINTED ACU TRS22A rules (with due regard to the above) and not the ACU website which still features (as at 01/03/09) the 2008 rules for download not 2009 - yep, caught me out.
Thanks to Chris Bradley for pointing this out to us and the ACU.
Price Increases
Due to rising land usage costs, insurance, affiliation etc etc we have had to put our prices up for 2009. Membership is upto £10 for adults and £5 for juniors, Trials will go upto £15 for adults but remains the same for juniors (we appreciate that most juniors come with an adult and we don't want to break the bank)at £10, Wednesday night entries remain the same at £10. Observers get £15 for each event except wednesday nights at £10.
More on Tong
From Roger Williams.....'it was my first trial with horsforth on sunday and with wet conditons for the last week it was a very good trial, first class' and Neil Crampton....Cheers for a wonderful day out lads. I think the changes worked really well and gave people of all abilities a really enjoyable day. I followed a guy from Lincoln around and I swear he never stopped smiling once and is looking forward to coming up again as soon as possible. The easy route was spot on for people of my ability and I gained so much confidence because I felt that I could give all sections a real go without the fear of injury to myself or my pride. Well done to all of you at the club and many thanks once again.
Kevin KPNuts
"Sunday at Tong - the best day I have had yet since starting 12 months ago". - Thanks Kev. If you think likewise or otherwise click on 'contact' and tell us. Thanks to all those who took the time out to pass on their thoughts to us at the trial. (Most seemed to think it was a good do).
Youth Rules
Kids must be at least 6 to get an ACU Trials Registration Card and at least 16 to ride in adult events.Youth A ride 125cc if born between 1/1/91 and 31/12/92. Youth B, 125cc between 1/1/93 and 31/12/95. Youth C, 80cc between 1/1/96 and 31/12/98 and Youth D, 50cc mono or 80cc twinshock, between 1/1/99 and 31/12/02. An A class rider can continue until the end of the year their 17th birthday falls. Licences can be upgraded at anytime without charge. NB the Capacity limits are important as the Insurance only covers riders on the correct bikes - so no porkies on the entry form. Full details in the ACU handbook.
Great Pics
Some really good photos of some of this year's Home Farm trials plus various other pics from Broo. Copy this link into your browser bar to view them http://www.flickr.com/photos/paulbroo/ If anyone wants a copy of any pics email us in 'Contact'.
Observation
Yet more from www.trialonline.org. Found some info on observation rules which are more than usually helpful with some dinky graphics. They are world round rules from 2003 but as far as I can tell are the TRS22a rules that we use (1 for a stop). Just ignore the bits that obviously only apply to World events (like entry corridors, tapes, time limit etc) The section on How Do You Mark in Guide to Trials has been updated to include more details. download here GS
Excel
Still haven't worked out how to enable the results to be downloaded as PDF's as opposed to Excel. So if you haven't got excel on your steam powered PC go to www.openoffice.org and download their spreadsheet program which should enable you to read the excel files. Maybe. Good News - Chris Maggs confirms this actually works!
Those little flags
It's not rocket science, honestly. Each section is marked out with red and blue flags - just make sure you keep the red flags on the right. If you are on the hard course, that's all you need to know.
If you are on the easy course its really really confusing 'cos you have to remember that if there is an alternative pair of yellow and white flags, you have to go through those instead keeping the white flags on your right.
Two reasons for us marking this way.
1. It encourages us to have one section but with harder bits in it (to give the better riders something to show off on) - as opposed to 2 completely different sections which just happen to share the same start and end flags.
2. (Far more important!)- it saves carrying twice as many flags around when we are marking out.
Hope this is all nice and clear.
